Living with a newly diagnosed chronic illness at age 16, I struggled to navigate how to manage the debilitating symptoms I was experiencing. I endured significant stress, inadvertently manifesting as physical malaise (rest or lack of rest) and worsening my symptoms of digestive distress, body weakness, joint pain, migraines, fatigue, brain fog, and insomnia.
Furthermore, I was living in a prevalent disconnection of mind, body, and spirit, wondering why the many antibiotics and supplements I had been prescribed did more harm than good. And then, I discovered Reiki.
Reiki has helped me to embrace my health struggles and see them as positive opportunities for growth, such as aligning and healing physically, mentally and emotionally.
I hope that my personal experience with this practice encourages you to recognize the value it provides and how it can potentially benefit you on your wellness journey and beyond.
helpful in the flow of life energy
Reiki—rei in Japanese meaning universal or spiritual and ki, vital life energy—is a therapy that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and find balance. From clearing stuck, blocked, or congested energy to spiritually directing the abundant flow of ‘vital’ life energy, Reiki works in a holistic, holistic way around the mind, body, and spirit.
Furthermore, Reiki is a non-invasive approach that is rooted in the belief that when energetically attuned to vibrate at a higher, more elevated frequency our entire body can function optimally and be restored. Could
Reiki practitioners guide this vital energy by lightly touching or hovering their hands over your major energy centers (also called chakras), helping to raise the vibrational power in the mind, body and spirit.
The practice can be incredibly beneficial, from reducing stress and physical pain to relieving insomnia and increasing blood flow. However, it should come as no surprise that many people may misunderstand and regard Reiki as a fad.
Unlike massage therapy, where areas of tension in the body can be targeted and released through physical touch, Reiki harnesses energetic pathways the client cannot physically sense or perceive. Therefore, it can be challenging for some individuals to fathom how or why this approach can materially alleviate various mental and physical ailments.
I, too, was skeptical before trying and introducing Reiki into my wellness routine, but after experiencing significant improvements in my health, I can now attest to why Reiki has been around for over 3,000 years!
Everything is made up of molecules that vibrate at different frequencies, determining how energetically attuned we are and how vulnerable we are to pain, stress, and other forms of illness. Therefore, it is not uncommon to feel weak when stressed or ill but strong and bright when mentally and physically healthy.
Yet, in challenging scenarios, stress can manifest in harmful vibrational debris in the body, naturally slowing the flow of vital energy and vibrancy. When life force is scarce, it is very difficult for us to raise our life vibration and flourish on a wider, deeper level.
Imagine that energy is flowing through your body like a circuit of electrical wires. Just as there can be a loose element or a short circuit, we can experience a weakened power from stress, pain, trauma, or any other factor that enables disease or inflammation in the body.
But rather than having an electrician channel energy into our bodies as they do to electrical wires, we can see a Reiki practitioner amplify the flow of energy through our inner networks and guide us toward ultimate congruence. Takes it away.
empowerment through reiki
Through the path of Reiki, I have opened my heart and mind to a new state of relaxation that I had never experienced before. A blissful state in which my mind, body, and spirit unite, allowing me to release pain from the past and feel lighter, safer, and more present in my human experience. It has also allowed me to understand how different emotions manifest in the physical version of me.
Before meeting and working consistently with a Reiki practitioner, I had long felt worsening physical symptoms that were the result of anxiety induced by my illness. But unfortunately, I was so overwhelmed with trying to live with a chronic illness that I fell out of touch with my core feelings and bodily processes.
While the purpose of this practice is not to simply let go of emotions associated with past hurt, I found that Reiki allowed me to understand how ‘stuck’ energies were affecting me and be at peace with them.
As a result, the physical, mental, and emotional relief I experienced empowered me to approach obstacles with a shifted, more nurturing perspective, worrying less about letting things go, but letting them go.
I also became less affected by circumstances and situations I previously viewed as unfavorable or limiting and grew to feel more capable of activating my natural ability to find harmony and self-regulation.
Indeed, Reiki has encouraged me to live in abundance and equalize my inner energetic pathways while taking back control of my health.
live with love
Now a certified holistic health coach living in New York City, I see that 16-year-old self striving to find my own path to ultimate health, recognizing just how strong and empowered I am right now.
By knowing how and when to release energy that doesn’t serve me, I have continued to make Reiki an important part of my daily routine for a better, more resilient life experience. As Reiki practitioner Susan Slade told me, “Think of your heart as a garden that is full of color and always growing.”
a nugget of inspiration
I’ve learned that as we age, we should prioritize maintaining good health and reducing our risk of disease. And while it typically emphasizes developing a healthy daily routine (think adequate diet, nutrition, exercise, and self-care habits), I also encourage you to use it as a means of taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional self. I urge you to integrate Reiki.
Individuals of all ages can have tremendous success with Reiki as it involves no physical or mental exertion, no follow-up procedures and no side effects. Reiki practitioners can also help you locate areas of tension and pressure in the body and relieve them painlessly.
Reiki may not be accessible to everyone, so it’s important to consider other at-home techniques to achieve the same energy-balancing effects that healing promotes.
For example, yoga and meditation are convenient ways to increase blood flow and influence your internal energetic channels. However, speaking with your primary health care provider before any exercise or mind-body training is non-negotiable.
